Hybrid Systems
Hybrid systems offer flexibility by relying on different technologies whilst also offering a route to decarbonisation which is often more cost effective than a full decarbonisation project. Hybrid systems combine different technologies and the choice depends largely on the priorities of the hotel and the building’s characteristics including location. Some rural sites might find a high-efficiency gas boiler useful for optimising the system to use the most cost-effective equipment depending on the environmental conditions. During harsh winter conditions heat pump efficiency will fall and it may be more cost effective based on the unit cost of gas versus electricity to run the gas boiler during these extremes. If a building has a relatively new existing gas-fired water heater or boiler, it might be retained as part of the system to handle peak demands. Solar thermal is also a popular choice for pre-heating water using solar energy, then using either gas-fired plant, heat pumps or electric water heaters to take the water to the desired temperature, this method reduces the demand on the system and harnesses a lower-carbon approach.
