Domestic hot water is relied on heavily across a wide range of needs, for instance restaurants and bars need DHW primarily for kitchens to clean and for handwashing in toilets. Gyms, sports stadiums and leisure centres have a large demand for showers although the peaks may vary by location, and the number of showers will vary. Swimming pools are probably the perfect application for our solar thermal water heating solution as they don’t require the very high temperatures demanded by other applications and solar energy is largely abundant and reliable. Solar is particularly effective for heating swimming pools or as pre-heat solution.

Hybrid Systems

For leisure facilities, hybrid systems offer many benefits. It often depends on the priorities for the site and the building type. Hybrid systems make use of a combination of technology types which may include gas-fired plant, electric water heaters, solar thermal systems and heat pumps. Leisure facilities come in various forms and many will have different priorities, some spas and leisure centres may be focused on sustainability and efficiency in which case a solar pre-heat working in conjunction with a heat pump system may be the ideal system to provide maximum efficiency. For larger sites with a big heating demand such as sports stadiums and theme parks, running costs may be the priority which would lend itself to gas-fired plant working with electric or heat pump systems. During extremely cold weather, the efficiency of heat pumps will drop which means the heat pumps will need to work harder and draw more electricity, in this scenario it may actually be more cost effective to run gas-fired plant during these moments. Other considerations include capital investment, space and availability of power as heat pump systems may require electrical upgrades, hybrid systems allow sites to deliver decarbonised projects in a manageable phased approach.
