Domestic Hot Water Systems

Decarbonisation

Housing projects are increasingly becoming more focused on decarbonisation in order to align with both government objectives and company ambitions. Our housing customers span across care homes, student accommodation, apartments and large properties. We’ve worked on many projects for BUPA and local authority owned care facilities to provide heat pumps for care homes, which include solutions for both water heating and space heating. We understand the demand profiles and the requirements to mitigate the risks of legionella which is why our heat pump systems include dedicated modes to manage this. For student accommodation and apartments, these housing types very often feature peak demands during mornings and evenings and our latest heat pump solution, Imperium, has the ability to run one-pass water heating to meet requirements during these peaks.

Hybrid Solutions

There are a number of reasons why a housing development or building might choose a hybrid solution. Hybrid solutions are a combination of technologies, they offer the choice of fuel types which can be used based on efficiency or when cost of running makes it more desirable. Hybrid systems can be less expensive to implement as often upgrading existing gas-fired plant to newer high-efficiency plant can still offer improvements to carbon emissions or use of existing functional plant. Full decarbonised systems can be expensive to implement, so by adding sustainable elements in stages offers a progressive and cost effective pathway to decarbonisation. Hybrid systems also provide efficiency gains, for instance, use of solar thermal to pre-heat water reduces the demand on heat pumps or gas-fired heaters whilst still adding a sustainable part to the system. If cost of running is the primary driver, hybrid solutions can be useful in using the fuel type that’s most cost effective in the moment, for instance using gas during extreme cold months rather than the heat pump where it might be delivering hot water less efficiently.
