Decarbonisation

The public sector is leading the way when it comes to decarbonisation, lots of funding has been made available to support various parts of the public sector estate. The NHS estate has a significant objective to become net zero by 2040 with legacy heating and hot water systems being a significant contributor to scope 1 emissions. Schools and educational facilities similarly have objectives to decarbonise with water heating systems playing a role in the overall carbon footprint albeit with different demand needs to hospitals. Generally the public sector estate is in different states with different types of buildings relying on older inefficient plant such as older local authority buildings and some MOD facilities. This route provides a more cost-effective route to decarbonisation whilst keeping functional existing gas-fired water heaters and boilers in service for peak demands or seasonal extremes. The total cost of implementing a fully decarbonised heating system can be prohibitive which is where hybrid systems can be an attractive route. Alternatively, depending on your specific objectives, hybrid systems which utilise a combination of technologies can work together to operate when most cost effective from an efficiency perspective and/or a cost of running perspective.
