Decarbonisation

Agricultural environments are often rural and remote, as a result there are usually electrical grid constraints which can make some decarbonisation projects challenging where large electrical upgrades are required. Despite this, decarbonisation usually makes the most sense for agricultural applications due to the abundance of roof space for solar thermal solutions and where self-generated electricity is available. Hybrid Systems

Hybrid systems incorporate multiple technologies which may include gas-fired plant, electric water heaters, heat pumps and solar thermal solutions. Hybrid systems have various benefits which align to a number of needs, one of which may be infrastructure limitations. There may be limitations to deploying full decarbonised solutions in agricultural locations as electrical upgrades may be required for a bank of heat pumps and this may push the capital investment required even further, or it might be very difficult to implement based on the rural location. In this scenario, hybrid systems may provide a pragmatic route to decarbonise without requiring heavy capital investment or significant infrastructure upgrades. Combining solar and heat pumps can reduce the electrical demand on the system. Use of gas-fired water heaters either as a top-up or redundancy can be useful in times of extreme weather conditions or peak demands.
