Decarbonisation

The pathway to decarbonisation varies from site to site. Different retail buildings offer different strengths and weaknesses for different solutions. Our Amicus AquaStore heat pump water heater is a great plug and play solution for delivering DHW using ambient heat. For more complete decarbonisation projects our Amicus Altus R290 heat pumps offer the reliability and sustainability a modern heat pump system should deliver. The Altus is compatible with both 2-pipe and 4-pipe configurations which means they can do a combination of heating, DHW and cooling as required by the site. For supermarkets, this offers an opportunity to benefit from heat recovery where it can be beneficial to heat and cool parts of a building simultaneously.

Hybrid Systems

Hybrid systems offer a pragmatic pathway to decarbonisation. Hybrid systems combine multiple technologies which could include gas-fired plant, solar thermal systems, heat pumps and electric water heaters. Some retail environments seek decarbonisation but not at the expense of replacing otherwise working, relatively new gas-fired plant. The addition or replacement of existing plant with decarbonised solutions such as heat pump water heaters as a phased approach when required can offer a more cost-effective solution. Hybrid systems offer various benefits depending on the priorities of the retail environment, use of different technologies can offer flexibility and back-up options in the event of high demand or unfavourable meteorological conditions. Another consideration for hybrid systems is when efficiency or running costs are a primary factor, during peak winter months the efficiency of heat pumps may drop to a point where it might actually be more cost effective from an energy unit cost perspective to run gas-fired plant.
