Lochinvar, Lorne Stewart PLC, and Steven A Hunt & Associates Deliver a Sustainable Water Heating and Heating Solution for a Healthcare Facility in South Wales

Lochinvar partnered with Lorne Stewart PLC and Steven A Hunt & Associates to implement a sustainable water heating and heating solution for a healthcare facility in South Wales. The project aimed to provide a highly efficient, low-carbon system that would support the healthcare provider’s operational needs while aligning with the building owner’s decarbonisation strategy and the UK’s wider net-zero ambitions.

Objectives

The primary objective of the project was to develop a comprehensive and sustainable domestic hot water (DHW) and heating system that would meet the stringent demands of a busy healthcare facility, and ensure compliance with Part L building efficiency standards as it was a new build. Hospitals and healthcare buildings require a continuous and reliable supply of hot water and heating to support patient care, hygiene, and critical operations. Therefore, the solution needed to combine high performance with sustainability to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

The building owner’s commitment to decarbonisation was a driving force behind the project, ensuring that the chosen system would contribute to lower operational costs, reduced environmental impact, and compliance with evolving UK regulations on energy efficiency. Additionally, the solution had to integrate seamlessly into the facility’s existing infrastructure while maintaining the high standards of reliability required in healthcare settings.

Solution

12x Solar Flat Plate Collectors
7x Amicus High Temperature ASHP
1x SIVS220GE Indirect Water Heater
1x LBT1500 Thermal Store

Steven A Hunt & Associates specified a Lochinvar Amicus High Temperature Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) system for domestic hot water, combined with a separate High Temperature ASHP system for heating. This dual-system approach, enhanced with Solar Thermal technology, was selected to maximise efficiency and sustainability while ensuring a continuous and dependable energy supply for the healthcare facility.

Lochinvar was the preferred choice due to its longstanding reputation for providing innovative, high-performance water heating solutions trusted across commercial and industrial sectors. The Amicus High Temperature ASHP range stood out for its ability to generate hot water at high temperatures efficiently, even in colder climates, making it ideal for demanding healthcare environments. The addition of Solar Thermal technology further boosted efficiency by harnessing renewable solar energy to supplement the hot water system, reducing reliance on grid energy and lowering overall carbon emissions.

This highly efficient, low-carbon solution provides a future-proofed heating and hot water system that meets both immediate healthcare needs and long-term sustainability goals. Through close collaboration between Lochinvar, Lorne Stewart PLC, and Steven A Hunt & Associates, the healthcare facility in South Wales now benefits from a cutting-edge, environmentally responsible heating and hot water system, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to decarbonisation in the healthcare sector.
