Grand Slam Decarbonisation Project at Prestigious UK Tennis Venue
Project Overview
A prestigious UK sports venue, internationally recognised for hosting one of the world’s most iconic tennis tournaments, has taken a decisive step in its journey toward a more sustainable future. As part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate reliance on fossil fuels, the venue undertook a project to replace its ageing gas-fired water heating system with a modern, all-electric alternative.
Challenge
The existing systems included multiple Lochinvar LBF gas-fired water heaters, originally commissioned in 2009, which had been in continuous service for nearly 16 years. The systems provided domestic hot water (DHW) for one of the main show courts and two additional systems, one for the male changing room and another system for the female changing room. While these units had provided reliable hot water over the years, they no longer aligned with the venue’s evolving sustainability and decarbonisation goals.
With high, consistent hot water demand across extensive bathrooms and shower facilities, the new system needed to offer exceptional performance, reliability, and energy efficiency—while also supporting the site’s transition away from gas.
Solution
To meet the venue’s requirements, ten Lochinvar Cavalier Eco electric storage water heaters were installed, replacing the legacy gas-fired LBF units. The Cavalier Eco range is ideally suited to high-demand applications and provides a robust, fully electric hot water solution that aligns with decarbonisation strategies.
Key Product Features:
- All-electric operation: Enables complete removal of gas-fired water heating
- Enamel-lined steel tank: Durable and corrosion-resistant, with magnesium anodes
- Multiple immersion elements: Offers redundancy, staged heating, and flexible power configurations
- Integrated digital controls: For precise time and temperature management
- High-grade insulation: Minimises heat loss for improved energy efficiency
- Range of sizes: Available in 173 to 264 litres, with different power ratings to suit site demand
Installation Summary:
- Old Systems: Lochinvar LBF gas-fired water heaters (installed 2009) · New Systems: 10 x Cavalier Eco electric storage water heaters across the three systems.
- Fuel Transition: Full switch from gas to electricity
- Application: Hot water provision for high-use sports and hospitality facilities
- Sustainability Goal: Reduce carbon emissions and futureproof the site’s infrastructure
Outcome
With the new Cavalier Eco system in place, the venue has:
- Eliminated the use of gas for water heating in key areas
- Reduced operational carbon emissions
- Improved energy efficiency with smart electric controls and staged heating
- Extended system resilience with modern, low-maintenance technology
- Made a significant contribution toward long-term sustainability and net zero targets
