Sustainable Water Heating Solution for a Hospital in Gloucestershire

Lochinvar, a leader in high-efficiency water heating solutions, partnered with Cotswold Energy Group to implement a sustainable and compliant water heating system for a busy hospital in Gloucestershire. This project directly supports the healthcare provider’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions, ensuring that healthcare facilities adopt environmentally friendly and energy-efficient solutions. Lochinvar’s extensive experience in delivering heating systems for healthcare providers meant they were well-equipped to meet the additional technical requirements.

Objectives

This large healthcare provider has set ambitious goals to become the world’s first net zero health service, requiring all new infrastructure projects to incorporate low-carbon and highly efficient technologies. The water heating system at this popular Gloucestershire hospital needed to:

  • Align with the organisation’s net zero targets and national decarbonisation objectives.
  • Deliver consistent and reliable hot water supply for a high-demand healthcare environment.
  • Ensure compliance with technical regulations, which outline strict requirements for hot water storage and distribution in healthcare facilities.
  • Reduce the hospital’s carbon footprint while maintaining the high standards of hygiene and safety essential in medical settings.

The hospital required a solution that seamlessly integrated with existing infrastructure while offering long-term efficiency and sustainability benefits.

Solution

To meet these objectives, Cotswold Energy Group selected Lochinvar’s Amicus LT Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and Amicus Boost Water Source Heat Pump (WSHP) systems. The Lochinvar solution was chosen to replace the existing gas system and the Amicus Boost WSHP was chosen for its ability to deliver the high temperatures required of 72°C, without changing any of the existing infrastructure. The Amicus LT heat pump relies on R454B refrigerant which was preferred as it helped to secure funding due to a lower GWP (global warming potential) then R410A. This decision was supported by several key advantages that Lochinvar technology offers:

  1. Proven Industry Expertise – With a long history of delivering tailored water heating solutions for the NHS and private healthcare facilities, Lochinvar ensured full compliance with technical guidelines.
  2. Energy Efficiency – The latest generation of Lochinvar ASHP and WSHP systems provide exceptional energy efficiency, significantly reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
  3. Sustainability – By utilising renewable air and water sources, the system contributes to lower carbon emissions, directly supporting the provider’s decarbonisation strategy.
  4. Reliability and Performance – Designed for demanding healthcare environments, the system ensures continuous hot water supply with minimal maintenance, essential for hospital operations.

By integrating Lochinvar’s advanced heat pump technology, Cotswold Energy Group successfully delivered a future-proof, sustainable heating solution for the hospital site. This project serves as a benchmark for how innovative low-carbon technology can help healthcare providers achieve their environmental commitments while maintaining high performance and compliance standards.
